Kinky ideas are everywhere! You just have to know what to do with them.
And what not to do with them.
And which ones to avoid altogether because they could put you in the hospital if you execute on them the wrong way…
Reading erotic stories can kind of be like browsing a smorgasbord of kinky ideas and great things can come from crafting your scenes based on your favorite adult fiction. We sometimes just need that little voice on our shoulder to whisper in our ear every now and then to help remind us when to get out our official Kink Academy notepad to feverishly jot down ideas and when to maybe just sit back and enjoy the story without taking on more than we can chew!
Today, that voice will be played by me…
Brainstorm for Broad Strokes, Not for Details
One of the biggest challenges people face with planning a scene of their own is simply put, where do I even start?!
This is where reading erotica can be great because if you’ve found yourself enjoying stories about damsels in distress or naughty school teachers, or maybe you find that you like reading tie-up tales or erotica about spanking, you can borrow some of those ideas to craft your very own fantasy to enjoy – just be conscious about trying to take too much from those stories, or losing the forest for the trees, if you will.
Who? What? When? Where? Why?
Any of these elements can make for great inspiration of your own sexy adventure, however too many details can easily go from enjoying a scene to acting out a script, which probably isn’t going to be nearly as fun because you don’t want to base your enjoyment on whether every single element of your favorite story was painlessly executed in your own naughty playtime! It’s just not realistic and it sets everyone up for failure if you’re expecting them to act and walk and talk in a very specific way “like the domme in the story did.”
Instead, look to erotica for the broad strokes of your scene…
- a damsel trying to escape after being bound to a chair
- a sex-crazed pirate ship captain with a harem of bondage servants
- a doctor’s office visit which unexpectedly includes some naughty butt play
…and then allow your own natural creativity, as well as that of your partner(s), to run with the story from there, so to speak!
Little Bites are Best
To build on that idea, it’s also important to remember that erotic fiction, just like our favorite movies and TV shows, are usually more complex than real life. This is because writers tend to dramatize elements of the story in order to make them as entertaining as possible and keep us on the edge of our seats, always coming back for more.
Which is all well and good if we’re gearing up to watch a two hour summer blockbuster at the theater, but when we’re trying to plan out a scene in real life – for real people to enjoy together – we need to remember that human aspect of it, meaning that maybe five stringent bondage ties in a marathon session are a bit much or expecting a domme to monologue extensively while she’s hanging weights from her sub’s poor nipples might be a little over the top!
This is where it helps to really hone in on your absolute favorite parts of a given story to craft the scene that deep down you’re looking for. What are the specific elements that really lit your fire from that BDSM tale that you’re just itching to know in the flesh? And how can you incorporate a couple of those things without trying to do too much?
If it was the description of a certain type of corset or a pair of boots that had you hanging on every word, maybe you hunt it down and then create your scene that includes that sexy attire.
If it was a unique tie or piece of bondage gear, you can incorporate that into a broader story.
Or if it was a certain phrase that a dominant used or a name that they called their submissive while they were feebly worshiping at their feet???
Stealing Dialogue from Your Favorite Stories
One of my favorite things to take from great erotic writing is also one of my favorite things to write, and that’s dialogue!
And while I don’t necessarily prescribe to giving somebody else a script of exactly what you want to hear them say in a scene, if you’re looking to build up your own kinky vocabulary, finding some erotic authors that lean into the types of naughty language that you enjoy can be a great way to put words in your mouth as you’re working to figure out your own voice!
Highlight phrases in your books, jot them down in a notebook, or even make a running document on your phone or computer with all of your favorite sayings as you come across them that you can later revisit and practice alone in the mirror or even with a partner.
Just like with most things, the way to improve your comfort level with talking kinky is simply to get yourself used to hearing those types of words coming out of your own mouth, and if reading exchanges out loud from your favorite erotic authors helps you to build up your own voice, then authors would be flattered to know that their words have made it out into the real world to help bring their kinky ideas to life!
Remember That Safety Doesn’t Always Make the Draft
It also bears repeating because it’s important that when you’re looking to fiction for ideas, safe play has to be a part of your scene even if it wasn’t necessarily a plot point within the stories that inspired it.
Every writer is different – some will see fit to include things like safewords and condoms into their narratives while others may omit them for any number of reasons … the characters are more experienced and are assumed to have already discussed them or even just because it slows down an otherwise fast-paced plotline to bring it up.
Fiction has the luxury of skipping over these mundane, albeit important parts because there’s nothing at stake for their fictional characters unless the writer specifically wants to make it a part of the story.
But in real life, we as people have lots at stake and so we just have to be thoughtful when we strive to bring these wild, sexual fantasies into reality so that everyone involved has an incredible time and we can continue being inspired by our favorite naughty stories for a long time to come!
Happy reading, and may your favorite erotic fiction inspire your favorite kinky scenes!
