Researcher Barry Smiler examines the distinctions between swinging and polyamory in this 10-minute video (Part 5 of 6). He starts with a discussion of the Swinger’s LifeStyle Web site (SLS) and his viewpoint that personal ads that are seeking friendships and dating friends (about one-third of the ads on SLS) do not fit his concept of swinging. “What I’m getting at here is, there’s an awful lot of gray areas betwen the swingers and the polys and the kinky people,” he says. His point is that there is a difference between swinging and polyamory, and that too often kinky people confuse them. He also argues that there are also many different definitions of polyamory, and that kinky people naturally do not always agree on them. During questioning by the audience, a listener notes that many kinky people, particularly younger men and women, do not identify with such labels because they are still evolving sexually.Another audience member discusses the difficulty of living in a rural area with no discernible kinky community.
