Presenter Barry Smiler starts his six-part presentation on polyamory by suggesting how the term is defined. In this nine-minute clip, he proposes that polyamory is defined individually — in other words, it means different things to different people. As a comparison, he shows how inter-racial marriage was once decided as immoral by Western social norms, yet today is seen as an individual choice of a particular couple. Likewise, Smiler says, kink or swinging relationships could also be framed as a self-determined choice. Viewing polyamory this way, he argues, could also allow other sub-groups to feel more open and accepted in the kink community.
